Simple Planet To Pursue Halal Certification For Cell-Based Food Products
Simple Planet announced its plan to pursue Halal certification for its cell-based food products to expand into the global Halal market.
A month ago, Simple Planet signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Halal Science Center (HSC) at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand to collaborate on Halal certification for cell-based food products and their global market expansion. Additionally, the company successfully developed an edible, serum-free culture medium using probiotics-derived metabolites, laying the groundwork for obtaining Halal certification for cell-based food products and ingredients.
Further boosting these efforts, the Korea Muslim Federation (KMF) Halal Committee recently issued a Fatwa recognizing cell-based food products and ingredients as Halal, accelerating Simple Planetβs entry into the Halal market.
According to the Korea Muslim Federation, cell-based ingredients can be recognized as Halal if they originate from Halal sources and are produced in accordance with Halal standards. This means that if cell-based food products meet Halal requirements, they can be consumed by Muslims.
The Fatwa is a non-binding legal opinion based on Islamic law, or Sharia, and serves as an important guideline for Muslims on matters not explicitly defined in the Quran.
Dominic Jeong, CEO of Simple Planet, stated, βThe global food crisis caused by climate change is a critical issue that the world is paying close attention to. By developing cell-based ingredients that can be safely supplied without being affected by environmental factors and establishing a sustainable food production system, we aim to enhance accessibility to cell-based foods, contribute to food security, and help alleviate hunger worldwide.β

Alternative Meat and AI: Designing the Diet of the Future
One of the most innovative changes in the food industry today is the advancement of alternative meat (Plant-Based Meat, Cultured Meat). As the market for alternative meat grows rapidly, driven by concerns for environmental protection, animal welfare, and health, artificial intelligence (AI) is also playing a crucial role in this process.
AI is being used to optimize ingredient combinations, develop consumer-customized recipes, and design sustainable future diets. What kind of changes will occur when AI meets alternative meat? We asked ChatGPT.
Alternative meat refers to food designed to replace conventional meat and is divided into plant-based meat and cultured meat. Plant-based meat is made from plant-based ingredients such as soy, peas, mushrooms, and wheat protein, replicating the texture and taste of meat. Cultured meat is lab-grown meat, formed by culturing animal cells to create structures similar to real meat.
The alternative meat market is growing rapidly every year, with the global market size expected to reach $140 billion (approximately 200 trillion KRW) by 2030.
In this market, AI plays a role in analyzing thousands of proteins and plant-based ingredients to make the texture and flavor of meat as similar as possible. By analyzing thousands of datasets, AI identifies the best combinations to replicate the umami (savory taste), juiciness, and chewiness of real meat.
Additionally, AI-designed alternative meat compositions are layered using 3D printing technology to create a texture similar to that of real meat.
Furthermore, AI provides personalized alternative meat recipes based on consumers' eating habits, health data, and allergy information.

"No Sugar, No Calories"β¦ Pharma & Bio Industry Joins the Zero Trend, Following the βHealthy Pleasureβ Boom
As the post-pandemic era embraces the βhealthy pleasureβ trendβfinding joy in maintaining healthβpharmaceutical and biotech companies are accelerating the launch of zero-sugar products.
In addition to developing new products, they are also reintroducing their flagship items in zero-sugar versions.
The zero craze, which initially took off in the food industry with carbonated drinks, alcoholic beverages, and dairy products, is now extending to health drinks and hangover relief products sold by pharmaceutical and biotech firms.
Among the companies, Kwangdong Pharmaceutical launched Kwangdong Wisaengcheon Sparkling Zero, a zero-calorie carbonated drink catering to the growing consumer demand for a healthy lifestyle.
Meanwhile, HK inno.N introduced the zero-calorie iced tea brand Tealog in 2023 and has been expanding its product lineup. This drink gained popularity among young consumers (teens and twenties), surpassing 10 million bottles sold within just three months of its launch.
Additionally, Samyang Corporation released two varieties of Sangkwahwan Stick Zero, a zero-sugar hangover relief product. This product replaces sugar with allulose, a natural sweetener found in fruits like figs and grapes. Allulose provides a similar taste to sugar but with zero calories.

"Food Tech Contract Departments" Expand to Nine⦠MAFRA to Foster Corporate Talent
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) is set to accelerate the training of specialized professionals in the food tech sector by adding one more general university to operate a master's degree program this year.
According to MAFRA, applications for universities to host a "Food Tech Contract Department" will be open until the 31st of this month, with the final selection to be announced by the end of next month.
A MAFRA official stated, "We will assess the availability of specialized faculty and infrastructure in collaboration with the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) before designating a suitable university. The status of the contract department will be reviewed every two years through interim and final evaluations to determine its continuation."
Food tech, a combination of food and technology, refers to an emerging industry integrating advanced technology into the entire food production, distribution, and consumption process. Key technologies include cooking robots, 3D food printing, and alternative food production.
MAFRA views food tech as a "future growth engine" that can expand the agricultural sector. As of 2020, the domestic food tech market was valued at KRW 61 trillion and has been growing at an annual rate of 31%.
Currently, there are eight universities offering food tech contract departments, including Kyung Hee University, Korea University (Sejong), Seoul National University, Chonnam National University, Jeonbuk National University, Jeonju University, POSTECH, and Hanyang University.
Meanwhile, to further accelerate the growth of the food tech industry, MAFRA plans to expand research support centers from three to five this year and invest KRW 121.2 billion in production and research infrastructure for new industries, including food tech.
