UK Approves Cultured Meat for Pet Food: A European First
The UK has become the first country in Europe to open a commercial market for cultured meat by approving its use in pet food.
On the 17th, the Financial Times (FT) reported that the UK has authorized the use of chicken meat cultured from animal cells in pet food. British cultured meat manufacturer, Petely, received regulatory approval from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Starting this year, Petely plans to sell its cultured chicken meat to pet food manufacturers.
Owen Ensor, co-founder and CEO of Petely, stated, "Thanks to Brexit, we were able to bypass European Union (EU) regulations, and with the government's encouragement of biotech and innovation, we were able to secure approval in the UK."

European Consumers Demand Choice on Cell-Based Meat
Consumers across Europe are expressing a strong desire to make their own decisions about consuming cell-based meat once it is approved for sale by the EU.
This sentiment was highlighted in a report released by the Good Food Institute Europe (GFI Europe) on the 12th, ahead of the AGRIFISH Council meeting on the 15th. The AGRIFISH Council, which includes agriculture ministers from various European countries, convened to discuss new food products, including plant-based and cell-based meat.
The Good Food Institute Europe, a nonprofit think tank, commissioned a survey conducted by market research firm YouGov. The survey polled over 16,000 consumers across 15 European countries.
The results showed significant support for cell-based meat if deemed safe and nutritious by food regulatory bodies. In Portugal, 69% of respondents were in favor, followed by 65% in Germany, 58% in Spain, and 56% in Belgium.

Market Trends in Singapore's Alternative Protein Food Sector
Singapore's alternative protein food market is experiencing rapid growth. The consumption of plant-based meat alternatives is expanding due to increased awareness of personal health and environmental sustainability.
In 2023, sales of alternative meat and seafood products in Singapore rose by 6.6% compared to the previous year. The main importing countries are the UK and the US, with distribution primarily through supermarkets and hypermarkets. The Singapore government has set a goal of meeting 30% of its nutritional needs through local production by 2030 as part of its "30 by 30" initiative.

India's Expanding Plant-Based Market Holds Tremendous Potential
India's plant-based food market is rapidly growing and is considered to have tremendous potential. This growth is driven by increasing awareness of health and environmental issues, as well as the rising adoption of vegetarian and vegan lifestyles.
The trend is particularly accelerated by the young population and urbanization in India. Plant-based products in India now offer a wider variety of choices and have seen significant improvements in taste and quality. Experts predict that the plant-based market in India will continue to expand in the coming years.

Intense Competition in the Growing $30 Billion Alternative Meat Market: Milk and Cheese Join the Fray
The alternative meat market, valued for its potential to address resource depletion and global warming, is witnessing fierce competition among food companies. The Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) projects that the domestic alternative meat market will grow to 29.5 billion KRW by 2025, a 17% increase from last year's 25.2 billion KRW.
Looking internationally, this market has expanded from $4.7 billion (approximately 6.5 trillion KRW) in 2019 to $6 billion (approximately 8.3 trillion KRW) last year. The main drivers behind this global market growth include rising concerns about environmental issues such as global warming, an increasing population adopting vegetarian diets, and heightened interest in animal welfare.

Pohang City Leads Future Food Industry with Proactive Food Tech Development
In April, Pohang City was the first in the nation to be selected for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs' Food Tech Research Support Center project in the food robotics sector. By early July, the city completed the basic plan for this initiative and will proceed with detailed design and implementation studies in the second half of this year.
The project will invest a total of 15.5 billion KRW to establish the center in the Iin-ri area of Heunghae-eup by 2026.
According to a survey by the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement on the 23rd, approximately 75.8% (3,413 companies) of food tech robot-related businesses are System Integration (SI) companies providing modules and services. Most of these are startups facing challenges in product development.
