Microbe-Made Alternative Proteins Also Used for Space Food
With increasing awareness about healthy eating, climate change, and animal rights, interest in alternative proteins is growing.
Professor Kim Pil from Catholic University's Department of Life Sciences highlighted, "Microbes can recycle nutrients and waste into protein sources we can eat." He explained, "During food crises like wars or disasters, when farming is challenging, microbial protein technologies developed in labs or facilities will be crucial."
Their research focuses on developing technologies for alternative meats, natural microbial food ingredients, and food additives, ensuring safety evaluations. Professor Yoon is studying "Corynebacterium glutamicum," a microbe rich in heme (iron), known for producing amino acids and safe for consumption as a food microbe, similar to yeast.

Rice-based lab-grown meat developed successively in Korea and China
In February, a research team at Yonsei University developed lab-grown meat with a beef-like taste using rice. Following this, Chinese scientists succeeded in developing lab-grown meat combining pork and chicken with rice using similar technology. This innovative method is gaining attention for its potential to produce nutritious food while reducing environmental burdens associated with traditional livestock farming. |

Jeff Bezos's Earth Fund Establishes Sustainable Protein Research Center
The Bezos Earth Fund has launched its second sustainable protein center at Imperial College London. Over five years, this center will receive $30 million in investment to research precision fermentation, lab-grown meat, bioprocessing and automation, nutrition, AI, and machine learning. The first center was established at North Carolina State University, with plans for a third center in Asia. These centers aim to develop sustainable food solutions through the commercialization of alternative proteins.

The 'Cell-Based Meat' Market in Korea Begins to Stir..."Urgent Need for Global Standard Regulations"
The market for cell-based meat, where meat is produced in laboratories by culturing animal cells, is beginning to take shape in South Korea. With domestic food giants introducing plant-based meat alternatives, opportunities in the market are expanding to include cell-based meat.
Earlier this year, Israel approved the world's first cell-based beef product from Aleph Farms, making it the third country globally to grant approval for cell-based meat. Apart from these countries, the UK, Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand are also reviewing approvals for cell-based meat sales.
In the industry, domestic biotech companies such as Excelthera and AmiCoGen are preparing for cell-based meat-related infrastructure businesses. Meanwhile, startups like SpaceF, Cellmeat, SeaWith, Simple Planet, among others, are actively researching and developing related technologies.

FTA in the Next 20 Years... Rise of Upgraded Diets
As global interest in health and the environment grows, there's a sharp increase in demand for vegan diets and eco-friendly ingredients. This trend is creating new opportunities for Korea's agriculture and food industry, highlighting the need for innovative growth strategies.
While still new to Korea, there are various popular vegan foods and eco-friendly agricultural products gaining traction overseas. Moving beyond basic soy-based meats, advanced generations of alternative meats closely replicate the taste, aroma, and nutritional profile of real meat.

โจJulie | This week, several new alternative food products are being launched. People are increasingly using their purchasing choices to express their identities, beliefs, and values. In this context, having a wider variety of options makes the world more inclusive and expansive. Previously, people might have boycotted products that didnโt align with their values. Now, they actively choose products that connect with their beliefs, using their consumption to make a statement.
๐ฆRio | This July, alternative proteins like cell-based meat are making waves! With biotechnology leading the charge, we're seeing exciting innovations in protein production. Imagine meats that taste and feel just like the real deal, but with a smaller environmental footprint. It's not just about delicious food; it's about sustainable choices that tackle food security and animal welfare issues head-on. Get ready to bite into the future of foodโit's tastier and greener than ever!
๐Wendy | Cell-based meat that tastes like beef and alternative proteins made from microbes are becoming more common. Isn't it exciting to see how the growing market for cell-based meat and alternative foods will drive change? It really feels like the future is changing right before our eyes! |
