"Lead Global Standards": Korea-Singapore Sign Food Safety MOU
Korea is advancing efforts to lead global regulatory standards for future food industries. As part of this strategy, Korea is collaborating with Singapore to establish international standards in the innovative food sector, particularly focusing on new food materials.
On October 8th, during a summit between South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, the two nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of Korea (MFDS) and the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment of Singapore (MSE) on food safety cooperation.
The MOU outlines key areas of collaboration, including:
- Expanding regulatory cooperation on new food materials and innovative food technologies such as cell-cultured food.
- Strengthening digital food safety management capabilities.
- Exchanging food safety information and promoting professional exchanges.
The MFDS stated, "We will continue to expand international cooperation to enhance the global food safety network and innovate regulatory systems, thereby actively supporting the export of superior K-food products to global markets."

Cultivated Seafood Introduced to Korea through New Partnership
Singapore-based food tech company UMAMI Bioworks has entered into a strategic partnership with Koreaβs biotech company KCell Biosciences and bioprocess solutions provider WSG.
This collaboration aims to achieve large-scale production of cultivated seafood in Korea, following the signing of an MOU between the three companies on September 5, 2024. KCell Biosciences will provide advanced cell culture media, while WSG will supply the bioreactor hardware essential for mass production. The goal is to create cost-effective and sustainable cultivated fish production.
Korea, being one of the world's largest per capita seafood consumers, presents significant potential for cultivated fish. UMANI Bioworks hopes this partnership will accelerate the commercialization of cultivated fish in the Korean market and establish similar collaboration models across Asia.

UPSIDE Foods: Cultivated Meat as a Solution for Sustainable Markets
On the final day of Bioprocess International 2024, Kalle Johnson, Senior Director of Cell Culture Media at UPSIDE Foods, discussed the challenges and promises of supplying cultivated meat to restaurants and grocery stores.
Johnson warned that global demand for meat is expected to double by 2050, which could threaten environmental sustainability. He noted that traditional beef production has approximately 90% more impact on greenhouse gas emissions compared to cultivated beef.
However, the benefits of cultivated meat are less pronounced in chicken production. Additionally, Johnson highlighted the current shortage of media supply needed for large-scale production in the fast-growing cultivated meat market. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to counter attempts to ban the sale of cultivated meat in certain states, including a lawsuit arguing that a Florida law is unconstitutional.

Cultivated Meat Could Halve Social Costs Compared to Animal Meat
Recent studies suggest that cultivated meat could reduce social costs by half compared to traditional animal-based meat.
This indicates positive implications for environmental protection and animal welfare. Cultivated meat requires fewer resources and supports sustainable production, highlighting its potential as a key player in the future food market. Such research strengthens the case for consumers to choose cultivated meat.
