The Era of Cultivated Meat Is Approaching
As a solution to the global food crisis, the world is turning its attention to cultivaed meat โ also known as lab-grown meat. Recently, a research team from the University of Tokyo in Japan made headlines by creating a piece of chicken meat weighing 11 grams using a device that supplies nutrients and oxygen in a lab setting. Cultivated meat offers a sustainable alternative by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock farming while still providing animal-based protein to humanity.
Cultivated meat is produced by extracting stem cells from living animals and multiplying them in a nutrient-rich culture medium. It can take the form of whole cuts of meat or processed types like sausages and luncheon meats. Compared to conventional meat production, cultivated meat uses 95% less land and 75% less water, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 87%.

Steak on the Moon? Cultivated Meat Device Launched into Space
At 8:48 p.m. on the 21st (local time), a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Onboard was SpaceLab Mark 1, a space-cultivation laboratory developed by the UK's Frontier Space in collaboration with researchers from Imperial College London (ICL). The rocket also carried South Korea's reconnaissance satellite No. 4 into orbit.
The SpaceLab Mark 1 is designed to test whether food can be produced using cell culture technology in outer space. It was loaded onto Phoenix 1, Europeโs first reusable spacecraft developed by ATMOS Space Cargo of Germany, and returned to Earth two hours later.
Supported by the European Space Agency (ESA), the UK research team plans to ferment genetically modified microbes in space to produce food ingredients like proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and dietary fiber โ and process them into desired shapes and flavors. Frontier has announced plans to build a small-scale cultivated food production facility aboard the space station within the next two years.

Alternative Food Tech Company INTAKE Partners with B2B Foodservice Provider JSG
Alternative food tech company INTAKE (CEO: Han Nok-Yeop) announced on the 29th that it has entered into a strategic partnership with B2B foodservice company JSG Co., Ltd., officially entering the institutional catering and food distribution market.
INTAKE has completed an investment agreement to acquire a major stake in JSG, and both companies plan to pursue joint growth through this strategic partnership. INTAKE also aims to prepare for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in the near future.

6 Trillion KRW Functional Food Market โ Blood Sugar and Anti-aging Care for Women in Their 20s to 40s
As interest in health and the environment grows, plant-based foods have become more than just a trend โ they are going mainstream.
Concerns about health are driving increased consumption of functional health supplements. Not only women in their 50s and 60s but also younger women in their 20s to 40s are actively consuming functional supplements, showing that the consumer base is expanding.
According to the Korea Health Supplements Association, the domestic health supplement market reached 6.044 trillion KRW last year, with a purchase experience rate of 82.1% โ meaning more than 8 out of 10 households had bought a supplement at least once. The number of purchasing households reached 17,793 last year, up 1,610 from 2020 โ an average increase of about 400 households per year.
